2008 Bodycote Prize Paper Competition – Beijing Saturday 1st Dec2007
Dear Professor
You will no doubt be aware that I now work as Director of Xi’an Jiaotong University International Surface Engineering R&D Centre and in this capacity I would like to introduce you to the Bodycote Prize Paper Competition.
The Bodycote Company provides international outsourcing support to all industrial sectors in the areas of heat treatment, surface engineering and material testing. The company has over 340 locations world wide including two sites in China at Wuxi and Ningbo. The company intends to develop some ten sites throughout China over the next few years. To encourage young Chinese scientists and engineers to join this dynamic company I have been asked to identify a representative from China to be a finalist in the 2008—Bodycote Prize Paper Competition, details of which are attached.
In view of the high standing of your research group in the areas of interest to Bodycote I would like you to nominate an eligible post graduate student, which includes research students who have graduated since 2006. This is an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of the heat treatment and surface engineering sector in China.
I apologize for the short time scale involved but for the 2008 competition the paper can include already published material which should help facilitate your nomination. I will need to receive the name of your nominee as soon as possible and certainly no later than 19th November.
Please contact my secretary Shen Jing through her email address at redearth2008@gmail.com or office phone 029-82667714 or her cell phone 13259428724 at your convenience.

Many thanks for your help.
Kind regards
Tom Bell
Foreign Member of C.A.E.

This annual International Prize Paper Competition is funded by the Educational Foundation of Bodycote International P.L.C. The administrator of the Foundation is Professor Harold Hankins FR Eng, former Vice Chancellor of UMIST in Manchester U.K.

There are 3 prizes to be won by the 2008 international finalists: $3000 each for the best scientific /technological postgraduate paper, for the best scientific /technological undergraduate paper and for the best presented paper by any of the finalist. All other finalists will receive a runner up prize of $1250. The best papers will be judged by a panel of referees and the best presented paper will be judged by an audience of Bodycote senior management.

Professor Tom Bell FR Eng, Director of the International Surface Engineering R&D Centre at Xi’an Jiao Tong University has been asked to organize a finalist from China for the 2008 Competition. Agreement has been reached with the Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering Division of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES) to facilitate the selection of the China Finalist.

Candidates for selection as the China finalist will be restricted to the post graduate category and nominations will be made by senior professors or industrial managers active in the fields of heat treatment and surface engineering.

To be eligible for the Competition the paper must be presented in English by the candidate and be based on recent original work of the candidate in the fields of heat treatment or surface engineering and conducted at either the Master or PhD level.

The referees in coming to their decisions regarding the selection of the China finalist will take into account not only the scientific content of the paper but also the potential for industrial application.

The selection of the China Finalist will take place in Beijing in early December 2007. The presentation in Beijing will be power point and should last no more than 20 min including questions. Candidates are required to submit a one page abstract of their presentation to Shen Jing (Secretary to Prof Bell, at email address redearth2008@gmail.com) by 28 Nov. A full paper will be required from the China finalist by 15 Feb 2008 and will be published in the prestigious journal International Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering; co-authored full papers are eligible for the published version of the presentation.

To allow the China finalist to participate in the International Competition in Europe (March or April 2008), all relevant expenses will be met by the Foundation and as a finalist will receive a minimum prize of US$1250.
